Zermatt - The best ski resort in the Alps in 2020

The Matterhorn Ski Paradise was once again crowned best ski resort in the Alps. After two overall wins in 2014 and 2016 and a second place in 2018, Zermatt has topped the ratings yet again in 2020. The Best Ski Resort Report is the biggest independent visitor satisfaction survey in the Alps and is conducted every two years.

1. What are the most beautiful slopes in Zermatt?

The reason so many people love skiing in Zermatt is the breathtaking scenery. And they couldn’t be more right! These slopes are guaranteed to impress:

  • Rothorn - Sunnegga, showing the Matterhorn from its most photogenic side (pistes 11 and 7)
  • Tufternkumme, long, wide and with views of the Matterhorn at the end (piste 15)
  • Hirli area, you won’t get any closer to the Matterhorn than this (pistes 52 and 54)

2. Where is the longest downhill run in the world?

The descent to the valley is the culmination of a successful day’s skiing. The pistes from Europe's highest mountain station, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, down to the village of Zermatt combine to form a unique downhill run. At 25 kilometres, it is the longest prepared descent in the world, covering an amazing 2263-metre drop in altitude without interruption. Can you manage the entire run without taking a break?

3. What are the steepest slopes in Zermatt?

Do you feel happiest on the black runs, or are you looking for a challenge? Then test your skills on the steepest slopes in the Matterhorn Ski Paradise:

  • piste 59 - Pista Nera del Cervino: maximum gradient 65%.
  • piste 8 - Obere Nationa:maximum gradient 61%
  • piste 54 - Hörnli: maximum gradient 55%.

4. What are the easy slopes?

Close to the beginners' ski areas there are the "slow slopes", which are clearly marked. All snow sports enthusiasts should use them in a controlled manner and keep their speed down. Ideal for leisurely skiers and beginners, so that they can enjoy the pleasure of the slopes at their own pace.

  • Rothorn area: pistes 5, 6 and 7
  • Matterhorn glacier paradise area: piste 56 
  • Gornergrat area: piste 38

What adventures await you in zermatt?

  • The Zermatt-Matterhorn (CH) and Breuil-Cervinia (IT) ski area is the highest in the Alps. 
  • Around 360 km of pistes divided into 74 km of blue runs, 227 km of red runs, 20 km of black runs and 36 km of yellow freeride trails. 
  • The ski areas of Zermatt-Matterhorn and Breuil-Cervinia have a combined total of 54 lifts and 148 slopes.
  • There are numerous mountain restaurants and huts offering culinary delights.
  • Families are welcome - children up to 9 years of age travel free on the lifts
  • Children up to the age of 16 can ski or snowboard for free every Saturday
  • For even more thrills, there is a snow park on the Swiss side of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise with a Fun Slope and also a beginner's park on Sunnegga.
  • The highest point in the international ski area is 3'899 m above sea level and the lowest is 1620 m.
  • The maximum altitude difference is 2375 m.

FUNSLOPE ZERMATT

Young and old winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to an action-packed and fun-filled downhill run. At Zermatt Snow Park there is a Fun Slope with plenty to offer beginners and advanced skiers. Tunnels, hills, small jumps, high-speed vertical-face curves and all kinds of obstacles can be skied on the creatively designed trail. So tighten your ski boots and off you go.

WOLLI BEGINNERS PARK SUNNEGGA

Snow bunnies of all ages can practise to their hearts’ content in the Wolli park for beginners at Leisee in Sunnegga. The park is easy to reach on the self-service Leisee Shuttle. It is a sunny spot, protected from the wind, and has three magic carpets (snow conveyors), two cord lifts (beginners’ lifts) and a range of play equipment waiting to provide diversion and fun with a variety of snow sports.

Tip: Zermatt Bergbahnen AG has a special ski pass for anyone wishing to learn to ski at Wolli’s Beginners Park and on the surrounding blue runs – the Beginners ski pass. Children up to the age of 9 can enjoy the ski area free of charge. Simply purchase the Wolli Card and off you go!

Freeriding in Zermatt

Stand on the summit early in the morning, let your gaze wander over the untouched piste and plunge into the freeride adventure. The ultimate feeling of freedom can be found in Zermatt on 36 km of marked freeride trails. In the areas of Rothorn, Stockhorn and Schwarzsee, the full powder snow experience is guaranteed without exposure to the risk of avalanches. The downhill trails are secured against all alpine dangers and so offer even inexperienced off-piste skiers the perfect setting in which to learn the art of freeriding.

Where is the glacier ski area?

The summer ski area is located between Trockener Steg station at 2'929 metres and the Gobba di Rollin, the highest point on the Breithorn plateau at 3'899 metres. It has up to 21 kilometres of perfectly maintained pistes and the conditions are so good that national teams and alpine athletes from all over the world come to Zermatt for summer training.
